The Light at Sunrise

SVA

If you can get outside at sunrise — it might change how the whole day feels. I’ve been doing it lately and loving it.

And…there’s a reason the first light of dawn feels different.

When the sun is low on the horizon, its rays enter the atmosphere at an angle — scattering the harsh blue and ultraviolet light while leaving the healing infrared and red wavelengths intact.

That shift in spectrum changes everything.

Modern science is now confirming what Shaka Vansya Ayurveda has taught for thousands of years: sunrise is medicine.

This unique light does something extraordinary:

For your skin: Stimulates collagen production, reduces signs of aging, and prepares your skin to handle the stronger midday sun without damage.

For your eyes: Just three minutes of morning sunlight can improve vision by supporting retinal mitochondrial function — and the effects can last up to a week. The photoreceptors in your eyes also communicate directly with your pituitary and pineal glands, regulating mood and hormones.

For healing: Infrared light increases nitric oxide, improving circulation, speeding tissue repair, and supporting regeneration.

For sleep: Morning light sets up melatonin production for later — which supports deep rest, bone strength, and cellular repair.

For your circadian rhythm: Greeting the day with sunrise resets your internal clock, making it easier to fall asleep earlier in the evening — ideally by 10 p.m. during Kapha time. This creates a healthy cycle: sunrise → alertness → easier bedtime → deeper sleep → natural early waking.

Ayurveda teaches that dawn is a threshold — the moment when night’s stillness turns to movement and the body’s repair systems give way to renewal.

It’s the clearest, most balanced time of day to align with nature’s rhythm.

This is why sunrise practices have been central to the Shaka Vansya lineage of Ayurveda for thousands of years.

The practice: Be outside within 20–30 minutes of sunrise. No sunglasses — let the light reach your eyes. Expose as much skin as you can. Even on cloudy days, stay 15–20 minutes.

This isn’t a wellness trend. It’s ancient wisdom your body remembers.
