Your Body is Asking You to Listen
This year taught me something I thought I already knew. I became a Transcendental Meditation teacher decades ago and spent 5 years in a residential meditation program devoted to the development of consciousness. I’m now a chiropractic physician and one of only seven Shaka Vansiya Ayurveda-certified physicians globally.
My entire life was built around deep rest.
But these past few years, I let circumstances override what I knew. I kept pushing when everything in me knew I should stop.
And earlier this year, my body stopped responding. Nothing worked anymore — not the protocols I’d relied on for years, not the herbs, not the practices I teach.
My system shut down and forced me to listen.
I’d been pushing for so long that I’d forgotten what actual rest felt like. Not the kind where you collapse because you can’t do one more thing. The kind where you stop before you break.
That was hard for me. I’m highly sensitive – I process everything slowly and deeply, which means I carry everything deeply. And I was carrying way too much.
Here’s what I had to re-learn: rest isn’t what you do after you finish everything. Rest is how your nervous system repairs itself.
Ayurveda teaches this – your body follows the sun’s cycles. Activity during the day, rest at night. But we’ve overridden those cycles so completely that most of us don’t even know what being in rhythm feels like anymore.
If you’ve been running on fumes for months or years, one good night of sleep isn’t going to fix it. You need actual consistent rest. The kind where your nervous system can finally stop bracing for the next thing.
I know it’s hard to give yourself permission. There’s always more to do. Slowing down feels dangerous.
But when I finally stopped pushing and started listening to what my body was actually asking for – not what I thought it should need – something shifted. Real healing started happening. Not the kind where symptoms improve and then come back. The kind where something fundamental changes.
So I’m saying this: it’s okay to rest. You don’t have to finish everything first. You don’t have to wait until your body forces you.
Rest now. Even just for a few minutes.
This is why I work the way I do – with women whose bodies have been pushed too hard for too long. Women who need permission to stop forcing and start listening.
