Your Breath Can Calm Your Nervous System

Your breath can calm your nervous system.

Last week I wrote about why so many people are feeling activated right now. Today I want to share something that can help your nervous system settle.

I know many of you are feeling it. The tension, the overwhelm, your nervous system on high alert.

This is something I use myself and give to patients when they need to downshift:

Gentle Downshift Breathing

• Inhale through the nose for 4 seconds.

Slow, quiet inhale. Let the belly expand softly.

• Pause for 1 second

No holding effort. Just a natural moment of stillness.

• Exhale slowly through the mouth for 6 seconds

Soft mouth exhale, like you’re fogging a mirror.

• Pause for 1 second

Repeat for about 3–6 breathing cycles.

Some of us also find it helpful to let the exhale drop down into the pelvis or sacrum, almost like the breath is settling into the earth beneath you.

I’ve been noticing something about myself lately. I hold my breath. A lot.

Especially when I’m reading something intense or feeling stressed. I catch myself tensing in my solar plexus area, almost like I’m bracing for impact.

And I’m not alone in this. Many in my care do the same thing.

Have you noticed this in yourself? That unconscious breath holding when life feels overwhelming?

Just becoming aware of it and consciously letting your breath flow can help signal your nervous system that it’s safe to settle.

I know this might seem too simple to be effective. But don’t let that fool you.

Sometimes the most basic tools are the most powerful, especially when your nervous system needs immediate help.

The longer exhale signals your vagus nerve to shift toward parasympathetic tone.

Nose inhale keeps the breath calm. Mouth exhale lets your body release tension without forcing.

Use it when you feel anxious or overwhelmed. Before meals or sleep. When the world feels like too much.

Many people feel a shift within 60-90 seconds.

No forcing. No deep breathing. Just slow and quiet.

Sometimes the simplest things help the most.

I’m curious to hear your experience.

and I’m glad you’re here.
