When Nothing Is Working

Why Most Detox Protocols Backfire

If you’ve ever done a detox and felt worse instead of better – more tired, more reactive, new symptoms you didn’t have before – you’re not crazy.

And it doesn’t mean your body is “detoxing well.”

I’ve watched this happen so many times.

Someone does a juice cleanse. A liver flush. A supplement protocol promising to “pull toxins out.” They follow it perfectly. And instead of feeling better, they feel worse.

  • Worse fatigue
  • New skin reactions
  • Headaches that won’t quit
  • Brain fog that intensifies
  • Digestive distress that wasn’t there before

 

They come to me confused and discouraged.

But they weren’t “releasing toxins.” They were overwhelming their system.

Here’s why.

Most detox protocols skip the most important step: preparing the channels.

Your body has pathways for circulation, absorption, and elimination. In Ayurveda we call them srotas. When those channels are clogged or inflamed, toxins have nowhere to go.

Trying to detox with blocked channels is like trying to clean a drain while the pipes are still clogged. The debris backs up. It recirculates. It creates new problems.

The liver is one of the main channels that needs to be prepared first – not just as a detox organ, but as an intelligence coordinator for your entire body. When it’s overheated or congested, toxins don’t leave. They just move around and settle somewhere else.

This is what Vaidya Mishra taught me: prepare the channels first. Then clear the toxins. Not the other way around.

So what does preparing the channels actually look like?

It’s not complicated. But it does require patience.

Eat organic when possible. This alone reduces the incoming toxic load significantly. You’re not adding more burden while your body is trying to clear what’s already there.

Cook with spices. Spices open the srotas, activate digestive fire, and help your body process food into something it can actually use.
A simple tridoshic blend:

1 part turmeric
1 part cumin
6 parts coriander
6 parts fennel

–cooked into your food with a little ghee or olive oil.

Clean up personal care and household products. Your skin absorbs everything. Those substances enter your bloodstream within minutes.

Reduce electromagnetic exposure, especially at night. Turn off wifi. Keep phones out of the bedroom. Henry and I learned this the hard way after our 2017 electromagnetic injury. Your sleep space needs to be a sanctuary.

Support your body’s natural rhythms gently:

  • warm, freshly prepared food.
  • regular meal times.
  • sipping water with meals.
  • morning sunlight.
  • evening slowdown after sunset.
  • gentle movement.

Remove inflammatory foods:

  • seed oils – canola, corn, soy, sunflower, safflower.
  • hydrogenated and trans fats.
  • leftovers and reheated foods.

Use olive oil or ghee instead, and favor fresh meals cooked with spices.

These aren’t dramatic interventions. But they create the conditions where your body can begin to clear what’s in the way.

And here’s something really important: detox isn’t for everyone – at least not right now.

Depending on where you are – how burdened your system is, how sensitive you are, how depleted your resources are – active detox might not even be what you need.

Some systems need nourishment and rebuilding first.
Some need their channels opened before any clearing can happen. Some need to cool down before they can safely release anything.

And some people heal beautifully with gentle support and don’t need aggressive detox protocols at all.

This is why personalized assessment matters so much. We have to know what your body is ready for – not just what protocol sounds good.

When the channels are open and your system is ready, detoxification happens naturally. You don’t have to force it. You don’t have to suffer through it.

If detox protocols have made you worse before, this is likely why. Your system needed preparation first – not more pushing, not more forcing. Just space to open the pathways so the toxins actually have somewhere to go.
