This stopped me in my tracks.
I’ve been thinking about this since my late teens. I’ve always processed life slowly and deeply. I notice everything. I feel everything. I pick up what most people tune out. And over the years, I’ve watched the pace accelerate beyond what human physiology can handle.
Systems that used to compensate can’t anymore. Bodies that held it together for decades suddenly can’t keep up.
It’s not weakness. It’s that the environment we’ve created is incompatible with how nervous systems are built.
We weren’t meant to live like this.
All these terms…. “nervous system dysregulation,” “vagal tone,” “burnout”…. they’re just the body trying to say STOP. This is too much. Not just for us individually. For the way we’re all living.
Chris Kirckof captured this so clearly:
“Modern society is a lie that has cheated so many people.
- You weren’t meant to live this fast. That’s why our body and mind push back with anxiety, exhaustion and illness.
- You weren’t made to live in huge cities made of concrete where the trees are fake, grass doesn’t exist and sun doesn’t even reach the ground in most places all day.
- You weren’t made to be indoors sitting on a couch with a freezing air conditioner or a blazing furnace running while you hide behind fake light that pollutes the body.
- You weren’t made to wake up to alarms that yank you out of dreams just to go grind for someone else’s deadlines.
- You weren’t made to stare at glowing rectangles for 10 hours a day while your real life collects dust in the corner.
- You weren’t made to eat food that was engineered in a lab, wrapped in plastic, and shipped across five countries before it hit your plate.
- You weren’t made to drown your silence with endless noise of podcasts, notifications, music blasting…just so you don’t feel how empty everything’s gotten.
- You weren’t made to numb yourself every night with tv, alcohol and junk food just to survive waking up the next morning.
- You weren’t made to chase a life that leaves you exhausted, disconnected, overstimulated, and starved for anything real.
- You weren’t built to sprint through life like glitchy machines.
So our body and mind revolt with anxiety, burnout, sickness. These are all receipts for the chaos we call “normal.”
Truth is, we were designed for slower days, real connection, fresh air, sunlight, nature, stupid laughter, play, and actually being here.
That’s our real habitat.
And it’s still waiting for us if we’re bold enough to walk back to it.”
I’m curious to hear your experience.
and I’m glad you’re here.
