How many women are taking ashwagandha right now?
Years ago, Vaidya told us very clearly: Ashwagandha is heating. It’s primarily best for the male physiology. Women do better with it in transdermal form or as his herbal memory nectar rather than taking the whole herb internally.
I followed his advice for myself and my patients.
Fast forward to my recent viral recovery. I was supporting my nervous system and took a formula with ashwagandha as one of the ingredients. It was listed last, but it was there.
I felt good for a few days, it was calming. But then something shifted.
I could literally feel the heat. Not metaphorical heat, actual internal intensity. My physiology and nervous system felt like they were being pushed.
My sleep shortened, I started feeling anxious and irritated. Something was clearly off.
It wasn’t my imagination. It was clear physiologic push, and because my system is so transparent, I could track it precisely.
I sometimes joke that my nervous system is like saran wrap. Nothing is buffered, everything registers immediately.
Vaidya once told me we had similar nervous systems, that we both felt everything very quickly. It’s a great blessing and also….not so great!
Thank goodness that as soon as I stopped the ashwagandha, the intensity immediately stopped.
Now, here’s what’s important to understand. This isn’t an anti-ashwagandha post.
Ashwagandha is a rasayana, meaning it slows aging and removes imbalances. It is balya, meaning it builds strength – mental, physical, and deep tissue strength. It nourishes the nerve tissue and ultimately supports ojas, which governs immunity and neurohormones.
In modern language we call it an adaptogen because it increases the body’s ability to handle stress.
It is a powerful, intelligent herb.
But it is also ushna. It carries heat physically and energetically.
Many women today are already running on overdrive, constantly in high gear and pushing through no matter what. Ashwagandha helps you handle more stress.
But when you’re already running on overdrive, handling more doesn’t bring balance. It just lets you push harder.
How many women are taking whole-herb ashwagandha daily? How many feel subtle or even overt intensity?
I’m curious.
Have you felt heat or push from it?
Not everyone will. Some systems love it. But some of us feel it immediately.
I’m curious to hear your experience.
and I’m glad you’re here.
