EMFs leave us starving for Soma

Foundations of Health

In 2016, Henry and I each began experiencing unexplained symptoms that we eventually traced back to electromagnetic exposure (EMFs)

We had felt so blessed to find a condo right next door to my mom after my dad had passed.

Perfect, right?

But a few months after we had moved in, I started experiencing  strange episodes of lightning-like flashes through my field of vision. I couldn’t figure out what was happening.

Henry started having severe heart arrhythmias that would appear out of nowhere.

A dear friend and colleague suggested we hire an EMF specialist. He showed up with multiple meters and devices and spent hours measuring everything.

And then he found the culprit.

Our condo was directly above a room that housed 24 smart meters for the entire building.

We were sleeping, eating and living directly above them.

We got out of there as fast as we could.

That experience changed everything for us.

I dove into courses on electromagnetic exposure for doctors.

Henry went even further and completely changed careers. He went to the Building Biology Institute in Santa Fe and became an EMRS, an Electromagnetic Radiation Specialist.

Now he helps people and businesses make their environments healthier and more livable.

We learned the hard way. And I don’t want that for you.

Looking back, my symptoms were on the more dramatic end. Lightning flashes through your field of vision are hard to miss.

But what I’ve seen clinically is that most people’s symptoms can be far subtler and much easier to attribute to something else entirely.

    • Exhaustion.
    • Feeling wired or overstimulated.
    • Poor sleep.
    • Strange inflammatory symptoms.
    • Heart rhythm issues.
    • A body that simply stops tolerating modern life well.

Nothing that obviously says “electromagnetic.”

And there is a LOT of research on this.

This isn’t something Henry and I understood when we first experienced these symptoms.

One of the largest studies ever done was the $30 million National Toxicology Program study in the U.S. Researchers found “clear evidence” of malignant heart tumors in male rats exposed to cell phone radiofrequency radiation, as well as evidence of malignant brain tumors.

Another large study from the Ramazzini Institute in Italy also found malignant heart tumors in exposed male rats, along with an increase in brain tumors.

And this isn’t only about cancer.

Researchers have found DNA damage in brain cells, oxidative stress, changes in brain glucose metabolism, and effects on the autonomic nervous system and heart rate.

One human study found that some people developed an immediate increase in heart rate when exposed to a 2.4 GHz cordless phone signal.

That last one certainly caught our attention after what happened to Henry.

There are between 20,000 and 30,000 published papers in this field.

Henry recently finished going through an enormous amount of this research himself and put together a collection of some of the studies he found most important.

I’ve included links to several of these studies at the end of this email if you’d like to read more.

What has made the biggest difference for us.

We certainly don’t try to eliminate EMF exposure completely. In today’s world, that’s nearly impossible.

But there are some things we do VERY differently now.

We made our bedroom a sanctuary.

This is the biggest one for us.

We try to make our bedroom a sanctuary from EMF exposure while we sleep.

Henry installed a remote cut-off switch at our electrical panel. One click from the bedside shuts off power to the entire bedroom while we sleep.

You certainly don’t have to do it that way. There are other options.

But after discovering that we had been sleeping directly over 24 smart meters, giving our bodies a break from exposure at night became really important to us.

Our phones never charge in the bedroom.

We also don’t have things plugged into the wall behind our bed, including on the other side of the wall where our heads rest. Electrical fields travel through walls.

We keep our distance.

Even a few feet can make a difference.

I don’t use my cell phone for calls at all, ever. I use it mostly to download things from my wired computer, and Henry uses his sparingly when he absolutely has to.

Now, I know most people aren’t going to do that!

But you CAN avoid carrying your phone against your body.

You can use speakerphone or wired headphones instead of holding it against your head.

And you can use airplane mode when you’re not actively using it.

And please don’t work with your laptop directly on your lap.

We get outside and ground ourselves.

We ground ourselves often.

Several months ago I shared how Vaidya Mishra’s father told him to bury people in the sand at the beach if they had too much electromagnetic exposure.

I LOVE that story.

We’re lucky. We live by the beach, and I walk barefoot on the sand almost every day.

But you don’t need a beach.

Grass works. Soil works. Spend time outside. Spend time in nature.

We reduce exposure where we can.

We use wired internet connections instead of wi-fi whenever possible, and we don’t use Bluetooth at all.

We’re also mindful about how much time we spend on devices.

None of this is about being perfect.

It’s about reducing what we can.

And giving the body some time every day when it isn’t being constantly exposed.

    • Time to sleep.
    • Time outside.
    • Time on the earth.
    • Time in nature.

We support the nadis.

And then there is another piece of this that comes directly from Shaka Vansya Ayurveda.

Exposure to EMFs can disturb the nadis, the subtle vibrational channels that carry prana throughout the body.

And to understand why that matters, you first have to understand a little bit about Prana.

Prana is usually translated as “life force,” but in SVA it is much more specific than that.

Prana supports our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health, and it has three primary components: Soma, the cooling, nourishing intelligence; Agni, the transforming intelligence; and Marut, which governs movement and helps direct when, where and how that transformation takes place.

This is where it gets fascinating.

Different types of EMFs affect Prana differently. Electromagnetic radiation disturbs the Agni component of Prana, while lower-frequency electromagnetic fields disturb Marut.

And think about what that means.

Marut helps direct how much Soma should be transformed, when that transformation should happen and where it is needed. When Marut becomes disturbed, that intelligence is disturbed too. And without that proper direction, the body cannot build healthy, intelligent tissue.

But it goes even further.

EMF exposure can disturb the intelligence of the nadis themselves.

The nadis aren’t simply passive tubes carrying something from one place to another. They have an intelligence. They receive Prana, process it and deliver what is needed to different areas, organs and cells.

According to Vaidya, when that intelligence becomes disturbed, the nadis can begin circulating what he called “synthetic energy” along with healthy Prana.

I find this absolutely fascinating. And disturbing, considering life on the planet today.

Of particular concern about the sushumna nadi, which is associated with the spinal cord.

The spinal cord is one of the body’s great pathways for distributing this vibrational energy, and Vaidya observed clinically that EMF overload could interfere with the proper distribution of Prana, even affecting how it was distributed to one side or the other of the body.

So from the SVA perspective, reducing our exposure is only part of the picture.

But what can we do about it?

SVA gives us very specific ways to support the body.

Some involve the special transdermal preparations he developed. He recommended particular preparations applied along the spine to support the sushumna nadi.

At the time, he particularly emphasized this support for people spending long hours at computers. But that was decades ago. Today, with smartphones, Wi-Fi and wireless technology surrounding us almost everywhere, I believe supporting the nadis is important for EVERYONE with a body!

But SVA also gives us some remarkably simple things that don’t require buying anything.

One is a clay treatment for the eyes. Make a paste of clay and water, wrap it in cotton tissue or a coffee filter, and place it over the closed eyes for about 10–15 minutes.

Some of the simplest recommendations were these:

    • Spend time under the moonlight.
    • Lie on clean earth, sand or clay.
    • Walk near water or under large green trees.
    • Splash the eyes with cool water.
    • Take breaks from the computer and breathe deeply.
    • Keep plants around you.
    • Spend time with fragrant flowers.

How wonderful is that?

I love these recommendations because they are so very SVA. We aren’t only trying to protect ourselves from something. We’re also bringing back the things that nourish us.

And that brings us to Soma.

Vaidya taught that too much electromagnetic exposure can leave us essentially “starving for Soma.”

From the SVA perspective, EMF exposure can disturb the balance of Soma, Agni and Marut, leaving us with too little Soma. And this matters enormously because Soma isn’t simply cooling and nourishing.

Soma is also the raw material from which ojas is made. Ojas is the subtlest material of the body and is deeply connected with vitality, immunity and resilience.

This loss of Soma may help explain something many people experience after too much exposure:  physical and mental fatigue and a loss of resilience.

And here’s something else I love: food becomes part of the solution.

Sweet, juicy fruits, coconut, summer squashes, mung dhal, ghee and certain cooling spices are just some examples.

And lime is preferred over lemon because lime is soma-enhancing.

So when I talk about what we do in our own home to reduce electromagnetic exposure, this is really the other half of the story.

Yes, we reduce what we reasonably can.

But we also bring things back.

    • Nature.
    •  Earth.
    • Water.
    • Moonlight.
    • Nourishing foods.
    • Cooling influences.
    • Time away from technology.
    •  And very specific support for the nadis themselves.

These are the things that restore us. And in the world we live in now, that restoration matters just as much as the protection.

I’m curious to hear your experience.

and I’m glad you’re here.

Warmly,

—Dr. Lisa Raskin 💙
