Ayurvedic Tips to Stay Cool in the Summer

SVA

It’s super-hot and humid here in Florida right now.  And probably where you are as well.   Don’t laugh but the only way I can go outside for a walk is to get my clothes and hair completely wet!   And it works!  I walk as cool as a cucumber.

Below are some Ayurvedic tips that will really work to keep you cool as well.  (Without having to get soaking wet!)

A few tips that should dial down the summertime discomfort:

  1. Of course, stay out of the heat as much as possible
  2. Eat foods that will calm that roaring pitta.   Foods that increase SOMA.  Sweet juicy fruits like mangos and pears and summer squashes cooked in ghee. (let me know if you’d like a longer list.)
  3. Drink fresh fruit juices and fresh limeade with fresh mint leaves
  4. Use vetiver and sandalwood essential oils.  Vaidya Mishra spoke about the vetiver grass mats hanging in the windows during the hot summer when he was growing up and how they would keep people cool inside.  Vetiver carries such cooling properties.
  5. Rose in every form is so cooling for body, mind and emotions.  Have you tried rose petal preserve?  It’s wonderful.  Here’s a link where you can try Vaidya’s rose petal preserve.  If you use this link and then put SRW5 upon checkout you can get a small discount.
  6. Our eyes can become irritated in the summer.  They can get dry, irritated and feel like they are burning.  A rose eye wash can help.   Add a few rose buds to ½ cup boiling water and let cool.  Dip cotton gauze into the water, squeeze out most of the liquid and wipe your eyes or even cover your eyes with the gauze for a few minutes.

To ‘cool’ those aggravated heated emotions….

p.p.s. And if you are interested in WHY all these uncomfortable things happen in the summer, here’s the Ayurvedic explanation:

Pitta is the dosha that can get so, so, aggravated in the heat.  Not only do our bodies heat up but so do our emotions.  NOT FUN.  The key is to add as much SOMA generating things as possible.  Soma is that aspect of Prana that we receive from the Moon’s energy that is so cooling and nurturing.  Too much heat (Agni) from the sun decreases our Soma and this often creates so many uncomfortable symptoms for us in the summertime.
